I served aboard the USS Trumpetfish in 1968 and did a very short TD on the USS Darter in 1967. Both boats were attached to Subron 4 and the USS
Howard "Pappy" Gilmore was the vessel that helped to keep us submerged
and at times "afloat".

A Navy man's first assigned ship is sacred, kind of like a first love.
Out of the six ships I was assigned to during my career, the Gilmore is very special to me.
fresh out of Instrumentman 'A' school in 1972, and after a long strange flight to the south, I found myself
carrying a heavy seabag and my guitar through the loud noise of Ingals shipyard
in Pascagoula, Ms. I finally reached my first 'Navy Home", AS-16. I was
scared as hell but I mustered up the courage to report on board. I was
treated to the likes of fine shipmates like Jim Forsythe, (OM1 at the time)
IMC Spates, (ran a pawn shop out of th Watch and Clock repair shop),
MM3 Ron Mathews, and many others. After Ingalls we returned to the Paradise of
Key West. Then on to LaMaddalena. I have many pictures of AS-16, including
the one just after we lost our Starboard anchor in Haiti. (It was used as
a station break on Big-G-TV ,later on) Some buddies and I
formed a rock band while in LaMaddalena. Probably the first American Band to tour
clubs in Sardinia. (yes I have pictures)
We had equipment donated from the sixth fleet band.
I even have live recordings from the "new" beer hall at the end of the pier!
I saw Jim Forsythe's letter in here, but I did not see an email address.
Jim, If youy read this, please drop me a line. I pray that you are ok.
I left the Silly Gilly on April Fools Day, 1974, and many more Navy adventures
waited for me, but I have always treasured the times spent on AS-16 the most.
When you enter my home, immediatly inside the entry is all of my navy
Memorabilia, the FIRST ship's plaque that you will see, is just like the one pictured on this
site. It is one of my most prized posessions. I am turning 46 soon,
and have been retired for almost seven years. Old, grey and bald!
But I hold a special place in this old seafarer's heart for the Gilmore
and my shipmates! Please write!

First ship I served on, in 1971, when she was in Key West, Florida. It was a fantastic time for me. I was a young MM3 waiting to go to Nuclear Power School at Bainbridge, Maryland.
I used to pray before we "Lit Off" the "Donkey Boilers" in the Fire Room. They were already bowed out a little, and looked like they would POP!
Loved Key West - Lived in an old funeral home (DEFINETLY HAUNTED!!!!!!!!!), and I went snorkling every day after work.

Great Page. I was looking for information on the USS Orion AS 18, but I found the Gilmore instead. I guess the Orion took the Gilmore's place in La Maddelena, because I remember seeing the ship's plaque in a little bar by the terrenia dock. I was there from '85 to '87. The info I'm looking for is reunion or any other info that would put me back in touch with my Navy friends.

He remained in the active reserve's intil the late 1960's teaching damage control in Tacoma WA. We are still sorting through his personel effects since his passing in 1997.

The Howard W. Gilmore was the first ship I served aboard in my career ( January 1979 to it's decommissioning ceremony in September 1980). A few weeks after I checked aboard her, we deployed as part of the JFK Battle Group and were one of the first ships to visit Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia since World War II.

I served on the Gilmore from 1954 to 1958. I made IC First Class in three years and served in both the electrical gang an in the IC Gyro Shop. I thought I was signed on earlier but could not find my registration. I really enjoyed those years. There were a lot of good people on the ship at the time. Papa Taylor, Mike Riccio, Bert Parasella. I remember the day I was to leave the ship in 1958 and was on the gangway with discharge papers in hand and the marines landed in Libya. I did another 30 days and missed the first day at college at Bradley University. I have heard from a few individuals but would like to here from more. I bet most of us are now retired and enjoying the good years. Regards Chuck Hansen cdhansen@gte.net

I served on the Gilmore from may of 70 (in Charlston, just before moving to Key West) till May of 71 when I mustered out. I worked in the R4 division as an electronics tech, the division commander was "Huston" a WO1, I remember Robbie Robertson, Dennis Raab, Massimgill (the tv expert). I have great memories of that time and never cease to be amazed at how when I was there I could not wait to get out of the Navy and get home, and now, almost 30 years later I miss those times when life was so simple and I enjoyed myself so much on $68 every two weeks!! I am still in touch with Doug Mansur who was in the rewind shop and remember and miss many people, Atkinson from Corpus Christi, Jerry Gosda, Chickenman, Gary Burkhart (head), Pacheco from the optical shop, a guy named Mattson from Waco Texas, and many more.

Can the pictures dated from 1972 actaully be from 1973? I met the ship in Key west in early 1973, if I remember correctly. When we arived at La Madda. The XO said if you go liberty don't all go to one island, they might not have the room for us all in one place (side note). As I recall the Beer hall wasn't completed or any other building. The Italian guards had machine guns and patroled the Island. I may be mistaken, I'll have to look at my orders for the dates. We releived the Fulton from there as I recall.

I was on the Gilmore from April 73 to May 75 and worked in the periscope repair shop 35A. I vividly remember my first boss OM1 forsyth (I hope his name is spelled correctly). I also remember working in the studio of Big "G" TV. I didn't know it at the time, but that would end up being one of the best duty stations I ever served at. I look forward to hearing from some the others that were in the optical shop with me.

I was in the Executrive office along with McManus, Fielding, Krause, Ireland, Friedman and Boehnke. Fielding, now deceased, and I kept in touch for many years. Al Keefer, the paymaster and I also keep in touch and usually call each other at least once a month. I see that the son of Milton Friedman gave some pictures to this website. I remember Milton very well. I am a rice and row crop farmer in California and am semi-retired. My wife and I have traveled to many places. I spent about a day at Subic Bay in the Philippines about ten years ago. The plankowners would never recognize Olongopo(spelling). Instead of grass huts it is a big city and I was shown around the naval base.

Would like to hear from any shipmates. See you at the reunion.

As an Electricians Mate assigned to C-Division (Craft) from July 1974-to-July 1975, I helped maintain/ operate small craft that shuttled personnel to/ from Santo Stefano (The ROCK)-La Madellena (LaMaad)-Palau. I was aboard The Gilmore for the 'Villa France, France' & 'Tunis, Tunisia' ports-of-call; my only memories are fond ones ..................

Amongst my most vivid memories of The Rock are: the beer hall, witnessing Submariners 'imbibe' & execute 'rituals' upon arrival to the Rock, the (Rock) bowling ally (under construction at the time), vert-reps, playing 'Harp' in the 'Rock Band' (played once on Santo Stefano), and developing many friendships during my [brief] tour on the Gilmore.

Good Luck to all!

I was on the Gilmore in Italy from Nov.73 to May 74 and worked in the pattern shop for Chief Tribbling (spelling?). What an experience, a liberity boat hit a rock and sank, the beer hall was built, the riot at La Mad after a fight between shipmates and locals at the disco. Calling away the divers to go and save 200 or so shipmates holding the landing from locals and the Italian cops after the fight. Some of my memories are bit fuzzy but I can remember a few very well. Does any one remember the night coming back from Paulma, Spain during darken ship and there was an explosion, or very firey discharge that scared the bridge half to death? It came from the foundry and was a long tube made from empty peanut cans taped together with a hole in the bottom for lighter fluid, the shell was a coke can with tape around it to fit snug. When fired a flame shot 30-40 feet off the port side o-1 deck that brought out the xo and every master-at-arms on the ship looking for who done it. The tube and other evidence now rests on the bottom of the med. If any one remembers any of these great times including when I was blue ball by the animal locker drop me a line, espicially Manasco, Mountjoy, Elston and any one I missed.

Boarded the Gilmore on Christmas Eve 1975 and left on Christmas Day 1976. Served 101 days as a mess cook andthe rest in the deck division under BM1 Cahill. Names that ring a bell are Vonnahme, Murphy, Kalinowski, Granger Pait, Malpass and Mahoney. Spent the Bi-Centenial in "La Mad" toured to Barcelona, Malaga, Palma and Marsailles France. Left the Gilmore to go to the Armed Forces School of Music in Little Creek. They didn't know what the hell I was coming out of the fleet into the Music School which is full of college kids in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. They all had their shiney new uniforms on and I reported in all my Gilmore Glory in dungarees covered with paint and a baby pin in my ball cap. Eventually I graduated as an MU3 and finshed another three years with the Navy Rock and Roll band "Iron Clad" out of Charleston. Was a crewmember from 2/60 to 4/62. I was in R-2 Div, Outside Machine Shop. The last time I seen the Gilmore it was in sad shape at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. I'm not sure if she is still there but I could find out if anyone needs to know.

Served aboard during the change of home ports to La Maddelena in 1973.

I was in the diving locker. Our biggest job, as I recall, was "salvaging" coffee cups from the bottom and feeding our pet octopus that Randy Everett found. The coffee cups were traded for food from the galley. Upon my return to the states in 1974, I was stationed in San Francisco. I am still in the bay area, but not the Navy.

As J. Parks Hammond, MM1 From 1974-76 I served on the USS Howard W. Gilmore in R-7 (an RCSS} and R-1 Divisions and was President of the First Class Mess and managed to get the First Class Mess recognized officially.

Thanks for the photos and allowing me to wander down memory lane.

How did he get the aerial views at San Stephano? I don't remember any planes flying over and it was very rare for us to have two subs to port and one to starboard while I was on board. I can guarantee this since R-7 hooked up the coolant overflow systems for any "nuke" moored alongside.

I served on the USS Howard W. Gilmore from Feb. 71 to Nov. 72. My 2 brothers Dennis and Larry were also aboard. I worked as the storekeeper for the deck force under Master Chief Jeffcoat. My brother Larry also worked for the deck force in charge of the paint locker. Dennis worked in the DC carpenter shop. Have many fond memories of my time on the Gilmore. Would like to hear from some of my shipmates. Enjoyed reading the guest book and seeing other who had served on the Gilmore even some at the same time as I did. God Bless each of you.
